  7.      In Appendix C, Font samples, starting on page 295 of the GEOS 2.0 manual,
  8. are shown 11 different font samples.  I noticed they all have what appears to
  9. be an underline character, but there is no indication of how to access this
  10. character on the C64 keyboard.
  11.      Can someone tell me how to get a typeless underline with GEOS fonts? Like
  12. so many things, I'm sure it's easy if you know which keys to push.

  26. GEOS uses straight ASCII. To get an underscore, type a left-arrow. Backslash is
  27. British pound. Shift + and - are curly braces. Type up-arrow for a caret.

  29. Darned if I can remember how to get a tilde and vertical bar. I was trying to
  30. experiment here but my terminal uses some of them for commands.

  32. I think shifting the at-sign, asterisk or equals should get them. And the ASCII
  33. "tick" too.

  44. I believe you can also get an underline if you put in a row of shift-spaces and
  45. then click on it and underline it, but I am not positive about that one. I know
  46. that's how you do it with some other programs, but with my 128 sitting here
  47. with a dead space bar I cannot check it out   <sigh>

  74.      On page 184 of the GEOS manual, there is a list of all the "strange"
  75. characters not represented on the Commodore keyboard, and the keys to use to
  76. enter them in GEOS.  It says there that the underline character is entered by
  77. holding C= and hitting the - key.
  78.      (Irrelevant Gripe:  If "next page" is <C=+>, wouldn't it be logical to use
  79. <C=-> for "previous page"?  And wouldn't it be logical to use the same key
  80. equivalents every other Commodore program uses, and that every hard-core
  81. Commodore user is already familiar with?  And wouldn't it be logical to reserve
  82. all C= combinations for menu shortcuts?)

  94.    Good point on the keyboard usage.  One of GEOS' selling points is the
  95. universal interface, where all GEOS applications use the same menus and dialog
  96. boxes.  Carrying that through to the shortcuts would make a lot of sense.

  105.      Thanks for the information.  I did some experimentation on my own, and
  106. found that I can get underlining by first selecting "underline" from the style
  107. menu, then using the space bar.  With each press of the bar, the underline
  108. character is repeated.
  109.     But I'll try GEO's suggestion too.  I found that shifted @, *, and = only
  110. give more of those symbols!
  111.     Ah... Live and learn with good old GEOS!

  122.      I followed your tips, and tried using the left arrow to get "naked"
  123. underlining.  Nothing happens.  No character of any sort appears.
  124.      Also tried using [SHIFT] +,-,@,and *.  All I got was more +,-,@, and *!
  125.      But... then I did something else:  I selected "underline" from the style
  126. menu.  After this, with each stroke of the space bar, I get the underline
  127. character, and continue to do so until I select "plain text." (Thanks to Marty
  128. Brengle for the hint, although she didn't quite have it right.)
  129.      Now, do I get some kind of medal or plaque for this discovery? <grin>

  142.    I believe the underline character is normally assigned to the C= -
  143. combination.  Using underlined spaces is actually a pretty good trick, tho.
  144. I've started seeing quite a few fonts where one or more of the "special"
  145. characters has been designed as graphic images instead of their normal values. 
  146. For instance, the TORONTO font in our FONT10.BIN in LIB 13 has one character
  147. set to the Canadian flag.  FONTGORIA, in that same ARC file, has one character
  148. set to be Dracula.
  149.    Unless it's an all-graphic extremely special font, tho, the space bar is
  150. always going to give you a space, and the underline (and other styles) are part
  151. of GEOS, not part of the font.

  162. to read.  :)

  173.      My findings precisely.  The C= - will NOT always give underlining,
  174. depending on the specific font being used.  But the space bar, used after
  175. selecting "underline" from the style menu, WILL always give an underline.

  190. Please indicate which GEOS manual you are refering in future messages.  I
  191. looked in my GEOS 64 V1.2, GEOS 128 V1.?, GEOS programers guide, and finally
  192. found what you were refering to on page 184 of both GEOS 64 V2.0 manuals.

  194. If you want to know whick V2.0 manual you have look for the holes on the left
  195. side (3 ring holes).  The 3 hole manual is the same (as far as I know) except
  196. for being incorrect on pages 144 and 145.
